Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Unlike the two teams ' first meeting of the season, Monday night ' s affair between the Norfolk Admirals and Hershey Bears began at a much more leisurely pace. Despite being scoreless and penalty-free for nearly half the first period, Hershey got on the board first at 7:25.

Right winger Stanislav Galiev released a wrister from the hashmarks that sailed over goalie Igor Bobkov ' s left shoulder, with Jon Landry and Tomas Kundratek lending the assists. The Bears extended their lead less than three minutes later when Chris Connor tapped in a pass from Tim Kennedy just outside the blue paint at 10:07. Cameron Schilling received credit for the secondary assist.

Though devoid of goals for the Admirals, the first period still held excitement, as alternate captain Brad Winchester became well-acquainted with winger Garrett Mitchell. After a short bout of fisticuffs, both headed to the penalty box for five minutes apiece. Hershey ' s Steve Oleksy visited the sin bin twice for tripping and high-sticking, while Norfolk ' s Jesse Blacker earned two minutes of his own for tripping. The Admirals were also called for a too-many-men bench minor, with Matt Bailey serving.

The Admirals would not start the second period as planned, when a pass intended for a Norfolk teammate went askance and landed straight on Kris Newbury ' s stick, who buried it past Bobkov at 2:18. Norfolk ' s Chris Wagner, who registered a hat trick in the season opener, would answer soon after with a goal through traffic to cut the Bears' lead to 3-to-1. Winchester provided the assist at 3:34, botching any chance of a Hershey shutout.

The Bears ' Mike Moore committed a high-sticking penalty at 19:46 of the period, giving Norfolk a power play opportunity extending into the third. Norfolk wouldn ' t capitalize on the power play, but Bailey scored far side soon after at 2:30.

Chippy play continued well into the period, with the Bears ' Connor Carrick and Admirals ' Stefan Noesen roughing each other up a bit at 11:19. A little over two minutes later, Newbury scored his second of the night from Dustin Gazley and Landry at 13:26, extending Hershey ' s lead to 4-to-1.

The fights weren ' t done for the night, when at 13:39 of the third, Moore and David Steckel went at it, both receiving five for fighting with Steckel earning an extra two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. John Kurtz and Mat Clark would wrap up the penalties of the game with unsportsmanlike conduct and roughing, respectively, sending Norfolk to the PK at 18:25 and 18:44.

Kris Newbury tacked on another at 13:26 of the final frame to give Hershey a 5-to-2 victory. Igor Bobkov suffered his first loss of the year, allowing five goals on 37 shots. Hershey's Phoenix Copley earned the second star of the game after a 29-save performance in his professional debut.

Manchester visits Norfolk for a two-game set this weekend. Friday's game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Scope.
