Road Warriors Acquire Top Defenseman from Reading
October 13, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Road Warriors, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, today announced the team has acquired shutdown defenseman Mike Banwell from the Reading Royals in exchange for forward Pat Mullane.
"Banwell is a solid, top-line defenseman that will be a huge addition to our back line," head coach Dean Stork said. "He'll provide a physical presence as well as leadership on and off the ice. We're thrilled to have him."
Banwell, 27, is a fourth-year pro with 68 AHL games and 81 ECHL contests to his credit. Last season, the Scarborough, Ontario native played 60 games for Reading and earned 19 points (3g, 16a) with 52 penalty minutes. He also appeared in a pair of regular-season games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL).
In 2012-13, the 6'2, 190-pound defenseman played a key role for three different clubs including the Trenton Titans and the AHL's Worcester Sharks and Springfield Falcons. He also played 28 games for the Albany Devils (AHL) from 2010-2012 and recorded four assists. Prior to turning pro, Banwell spent four years at the University of Maine. In 109 career games, he notched 18 points (5g, 13a) and 169 penalty minutes.
Mullane, 24, spent the majority of his first professional season with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs last year, where he notched 13 points (6g, 7a) in 46 games. He also skated with the Toledo Walleye (ECHL) and earned four points (2g, 2a) in 13 contests. A native of Wallingford, Connecticut, Mullane played four seasons at Boston College (2009-2013), where he contributed to two National Championship titles and scored 140 points (42g, 98a) in 163 games.
Training Camp continues on Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. practice at the Official Practice Facility of the Road Warriors, The Pavilion in Taylors, South Carolina.
