Saginaw Spirit Out Tought Peterborough Petes

The Spirit came up with a 6-3 win in a tough early season game against the Peterborough Petes at the Dow Event Center.

After 20 minutes of play the Peterborough Petes led the Saginaw Spirit 3-2. Peterborough jumped out of the gate with a goal at 9:40 by Nick Ritchie, assisted by Matthew Spencer and Cameron Lizotte. One minute later Peterborough's Steven Lorentz snuck one in the net with the help of Michael Clarke and Anthony Stefano. From there, the Peterborough Petes were caught off guard during a line change on a penalty kill, with the Spirit's Luke Cairns capitalizing with a goal. The lone assist came from goaltender Nikita Serebryakov at 15:25. Peterborough came back quickly though, with a goal by Eric Cornel at 16:27. Josh MacDonald and Matthew Timms assisted on the play. The Spirit didn't let Petes celebrate for long. Saginaw's Jimmy Lodge scored a power play goal with assists coming from Nick Moutrey and Marcus Crawford at 18:29 to make the score 3-2 Peterborough. Shots on goal at the end of the 1st favored Saginaw 15-14.

The second period saw a lot of hard hits and strong defense on both sides of the puck. Saginaw Spirit's Adam McPhail though was able to get one past Peterborough Petes goaltender Scott Smith to tie it up at 3-3, with a goal at 18:07. Assisting McPhail was Mitchell Webb and Brandon Prophet. Shots on goal for the 2nd period were even at 13.

The Saginaw Spirit came back stronger than ever in the 3rd with an unassisted goal at the 5:19 mark by Lodge, for his second goal of the night. Nick Moutrey then added a goal assisted by Nikita Serebryakov as he slid it into the open net to make it 5-3 Spirit. Dylan Sadowy and Jacob Ringuette assisted Connor Brown in firing home another empty netter at 19:38 to make the final score 6-3 Spirit. Final shots on goal favored the Peterborough Petes 43-41.

The Saginaw Spirit will travel to the WFCU Centre on Thursday, October 16th to take on the Windsor Spitfires. Game time is set at 7:05pm. Saturday, October 18th the Saginaw Spirit return home to host the Kitchener Rangers at 7:35pm. Be sure to wear your pink! Saturday's game is a Pink Out presented by St. Mary's of Michigan and Consumers Energy. Following the game there will be a jersey auction.
