The Return of the Comeback Kids

Between the regular season and playoffs, the Wheeling Nailers compiled 15 comeback victories during the 2013-14 campaign. On Friday night, the 2014-15 squad picked up right where that group left off, as they opened the preseason schedule against the Cincinnati Cyclones at WesBanco Arena. Cincinnati took its first lead of the night at the 14-second mark of the third period, when Brian Nugent connected for his second tally of the contest. However, Wheeling stormed back, as Jarrett Burton netted the tying goal at 4:41, before Derek Army and Chaz Johnson put the home team on top, 5-3. Jeff Wyer made the win stand up in goal, as he stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced, after coming in midway through the second period.

Let's Play Shorthanded

Even though both power plays failed to score on nine opportunities, the two teams were able to produce a pair of special teams goals. The Cyclones scored their shorthanded goal just 14 seconds into the third period, when Brian Nugent took a David Pacan feed, and slipped a shot through Jeff Wyer's legs. Later in the frame, Wheeling took its turn to light the lamp while playing a man down. Myles Harvey lofted a pass through neutral ice to Derek Army on the left side of the offensive zone. Army protected the puck on his backhand, roofing a shot on Joe Howe. Last season, the Nailers finished tied for third in the league with 13 shorthanded goals, while Cincinnati registered seven tallies with a man in the box.

We Have Friends in High Places

The Nailers will insert some new faces into the lineup for Sunday's exhibition tuneup, with all of the additions having attended training camps at the AHL level. Eric Hartzell is the lone NHL contracted player (Pittsburgh), and he gets the nod between the pipes. Joining him on the Penguins' side is forward Tyler Murovich, who received an AHL deal from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. After attending training camp with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Wheeling fans will also get their first look at defenseman Zach Yuen and forward Riley Brace, who have both signed on with the Nailers for the upcoming campaign.

A Handful on the Other Side

Cincinnati also has a set of changes from Friday to Sunday, including a couple of major pieces from the 2014 Eastern Conference Champion club. Defenseman David MacDonald and forward Wade Megan get inserted into the lineup, along with 2014 Kelly Cup Playoff MVP Rob Madore, who receives the start in goal. Joining those three are rookie forwards Francis Beauvillier and Joe Basaraba, along with rookie defensemen Shayne Taker. Basaraba and Taker both made their professional debuts last season, while Beauvillier dressed in eight games during the 2012-13 season. All three qualify as rookies, having played in fewer than 25 professional games.

Seven Up for the Home Teams

Sunday afternoon marks the eighth preseason contest in the last five years between the Nailers and Cyclones. Thanks to Friday's 5-3 Wheeling triumph, each of the previous seven meetings have been won by the home team, with the Nailers going 4-0 at WesBanco Arena and the Cyclones going 3-0 at US Bank Arena. Over the course of the last six preseasons, Wheeling has only failed to win at home in 2009 (Johnstown) and 2013 (Elmira & Fort Wayne). Cincinnati's preseason docket doesn't feature a home contest for the second straight year, after the Cyclones split a pair of games with the Alaska Aces in Anchorage last October.
