Bulldogs Overpower Amerks 6-4 in Season Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Hamilton Bulldogs (1-0-0-0) scored three unanswered goals in the final three minutes of the game to top the Rochester Americans (1-1-0-0) 6-4 in the 'Dogs season opener at Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday evening.

Bulldogs forwards Charles Hudon (one goal, one assist), Daniel Carr (one goal, one assist), Maxime Macenauer (one goal, one assist), Jake Dowell (two assists) and Gabriel Dumont (one goal, one assist) as well as defenceman Magnus Nygren (two assists) each collected two points on the night for Hamilton. Forwards Drayson Bowman and Nick Sorkin also had goals for the 'Dogs.

Rochester forward William Carrier opening the scoring at 3:25 of the first period when his shot in the crease squeaked past Hamilton goaltender Joey MacDonald. Rochester defenceman Chad Ruhwedel and forward Tim Schaller had assists on the play.

Amerks forward Johan Larsson put his club ahead 2-0 at 10:04 of the middle frame, which sparked a five-goals-in-seven-minutes span. Assists on Larsson's goal were credited to defenceman Matt MacKenzie and forward Luke Adam.

Forty-three seconds later, Macenauer buried the 'Dogs first goal of the season on a rebound attempt, with assists from Dumont and Dowell.

Ninety-two seconds after that, Sorkin parked in front of Americans goaltender Nathan Lieuwen and potted his second shot attempt to tie the game, 2-2. Forward T.J. Hensick and defenceman Darren Dietz earned assists.

Just over three minutes later, at 15:36 of the second period, Rochester forward Akim Aliu gave the Amerks a 3-2 lead, with assists from Adam and Larsson.

Nygren sprung Hudon on a breakaway 88 seconds after that and he made no mistake on his shot, tying the game 3-3. Carr had a second assist on the play.

Aliu notched his second goal of the night on a one-timer 4:22 into the third period to give Rochester a 4-3 lead, with an assist from forward Phil Varone.

With 2:57 to play, Dumont found the puck in close to the net and backhanded a shot up and over Lieuwen far-side to tie the game, 4-4. Macenauer and Dowell had assists.

Thirteen seconds later, Hudon raced down the right wing and fired a pass out in front that Carr tipped past the Rochester goaltender for the eventual game-winning goal. Nygren was credited with a second assist on the play.

Bowman slid home an empty netter with 17 seconds to go to seal the victory for Hamilton. Forward Jacob de la Rose had an assist.

MacDonald made 25 saves on 29 shots in the Bulldogs net in the win. Lieuwen stopped 25 of 30 shots for the Americans in the loss.

Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
