Victoria HabourCats News Release

VICTORIA, B.C. - Two lively right arms have been added to the fold for the 2015 edition of the Victoria HarbourCats, bringing the roster total to 15 players.

Local product Chris Fougner, a graduate of the baseball academy program at Lambrick Park, and Everett, Washington product Zander Clouse are the latest to be added to Head Coach Graig Merritt's team for 2015.

Fougner was a stalwart for the Victoria Mariners of the PBL last season, coached by Mike Chewpoy. The 6-2/180 multi-sport star had combined regular season/playoff results showing a 5-3 record, 1.71 ERA, and 65 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched "" and that included a nine-inning no-hitter on June 15 against the Okanagan Athletics. He is now in his freshman year at Salt Lake Community College (junior college), and his overhand delivery produces a plus-90mph fastball that will translate well to college and summer collegiate baseball.

"I competed against Chris's coach in the PBL and in college and we always had a great rivalry going, and I talked to Mike about Chris and he was very high on his athletic ability," said Merritt. "We are high on Chris and we look for him to contribute to the HarbourCats and our goals of having success as a team. We're sure his old Mariners teammates will be out to support him as well."

Fougner is the son of Brent and Trish, and was named senior athlete of the year at Lambrick Park. He turned 19 years old on September 20.

Clouse, who is in his sophomore season at Bellevue College, turned 20 on September 22. As a freshman for the Bulldogs, Clouse made eight appearances (four starts), and was 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA, with 25 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched. He is 6-2/180 and graduated from Archbishop Murphy High, where he was 12-2 with a 1.05 ERA in his senior year. His athletic frame produces a fastball that has been clocked at 93mph.

"Mark Yoshino, the Head Coach at Bellevue, recruits the best pitchers in the NWAACC conference, year-in and year-out, and we are happy to be working with Mark and Bellevue in having Zander in Victoria this summer," said Merritt.

Clouse pitched for the Watertown Rams of the Perfect Game Collegiate League in New York last summer, starting nine games while going 2-3 with a 3.72 ERA, and 36 punch-outs in 58 innings.
