Knighthawks Sign Jonathan

October 9, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks have announced the signing of defenseman/transition man Brier Jonathan to a one-year deal. Jonathan is the third draft pick to sign with the Knighthawks, joining Zach Williams and Ian Martin.

"It's a real good feeling," said Jonathan. "I am itching to go, getting prepared and can't wait until it starts."

Rochester chose Jonathan with the 27th overall pick in the 2014 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. In 2014, he raised the coveted Minto Cup with the Junior "A" Six Nations Arrows after knocking off the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs in six games. It was his second title in three years after winning the Founders Cup with the Junior "B" Six Nations Rebels in 2012. Over the past two seasons (2013-14), the 6-0, 193-pound Jonathan has played in 42 games with the Arrows, collecting five goals and six assists.

"He's a stay-at-home defenseman with good speed and a good stick who can get up the floor if needed," said Knighthawks Assistant Coach Jason Johnson.

The 20-year-old Jonathan has some strong ties to professional sports as the grandson of former NHL and Boston Bruins tough guy Stan Jonathan. Brier wore Stan's No. 17 when he played Junior "B" hockey for the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs. In 2014, Jonathan was a member of the Junior "B" Sutherland Cup championship team. His rugged style on the ice is very similar to his play on the lacrosse floor.

"He is a hard worker and goes out there and does this job," said Johnson.

Jonathan will bring that style of play with him to Knighthawks Training Camp, which is set to open in late November.

"I am pretty honored and I will cherish this moment," he said. "I am going to give it everything I've got."

The Knighthawks will open their 21st season on Saturday, January 3rd against the rival Toronto Rock at The Blue Cross Arena. Prior to the 7:30 p.m. game, the Knighthawks will celebrate their historic third straight NLL Championship by raising their 2014 Championship Banner.
