Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (Oct. 9th) - The Wichita Thunder, proud member of the ECHL and powered by Toyota, announced today that goaltender Tyler Bunz has been assigned by Edmonton from the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Bunz, 22, begins his third professional season and first in Wichita. The Regina, Saskatchewan native spent time with the Bakersfield Condors and Stockton Thunder of the ECHL along with six appearances with the Barons over the last two years. The 6-foot-1, 198-pound netminder has a combined pro record of 23-21-6 with a 3.27 goals against average and .889 save percentage. Last season, he was called up and made his first AHL career start on November 9th at San Antonio, making 34 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss. Bunz earned his first AHL win on November 12th against the Rampage stopping 34 shots in a 3-2 victory. He finished the season with the Condors, going 5-2-3 in 13 starts with a 2.55 goals against average and a .903 save percentage.
A fifth round selection of the Edmonton Oilers (121st overall) during the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Bunz played a five-year junior career for Medicine Hat of the WHL. He shattered the program's record for wins (115), surpassing some impressive names like Kelly Hrudey and Chris Osgood. He was named the Tigers' regular season and playoff Most Valuable Player in 2012 and was selected as a WHL Eastern Conference First Team All-Star. He added to his awards that year by winning the Del Wilson Trophy as the WHL's top goaltender.
Updates to the 2014-15 ECHL playing schedule will be announced within the next few days. Wichita opens up at home on Saturday, October 25th against the Allen Americans at 7:05 p.m.
