Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks have announced the signing of forward Ian Martin to a one-year deal. Martin is the second draft pick to sign with the Knighthawks, joining Zach Williams.

The 21-year-old Martin was the team's fourth-round pick (37th overall) in the 2014 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. The youngster brings with him a penchant for winning, having won four straight championships.

"Winning never gets old, that's for sure," Martin said. "I've been lucky enough to be on some really great teams and I'm really thankful to be a part of another great team. Hopefully, there will be more championships to come."

Martin has won three consecutive Founders Cups (2011-13) with the Six Nations Rebels and added a Minto Cup in 2014 with the Six Nations Arrows. It was the skill that he showed on the field while winning those championships that made Martin stand out to the Knighthawks coaches and management.

"In the Minto Cup, I was impressed with how well he was doing on the penalty kill," said Knighthawks Assistant Coach Jason Johnson. "He also had the knack for scoring timely goals."

"Ian is a proven winner in junior lacrosse. He has multiple championships to prove it," said Knighthawks Assistant General Manager Landon Miller. "We are looking for him to come into (Training Camp) in the best shape of his career and push our veteran players. (We hope he will) learn as much as he can and be a team player like I've seen this past season with the Arrows. Ian will score if given the opportunity, but at this level will also have to be productive without the ball, something we are confident he can do."

In his career, Martin put up 50 points (19+31) in 20 games with the Arrows in 2014. In the Minto Cup, the playmaking forward contributed 14 points (6+8). In his Junior "B" career (2011-13), he amassed 248 points (72+176) in 52 regular season games. His most notable season came in 2013 when he led the Junior "B" circuit with an astonishing 129 points (32+97) in 20 games.

"I'm just hoping I can contribute to the Knighthawks' winning ways," said Martin. "I know what it takes to win and I hope I can prove to everyone else that I can play in the league."

For now, Martin can take in the excitement of being drafted by one of the most envied teams in the NLL. With Training Camp quickly approaching, the newest Knighthawk has a lot to look forward to in the next chapter of his lacrosse career.

"I think Training Camp is a huge stepping stone for my career," said Martin. "It will definitely push me to (play at) the best of my ability, seeing the Knighthawks are coming off three NLL championships. I'm expecting Training Camp to be war on the floor - with 30 guys all competing for one another's spot. I'm really excited to get rolling."

The Knighthawks will open their 21st season on Saturday, January 3rd against the rival Toronto Rock at The Blue Cross Arena. Prior to the game, the Knighthawks will celebrate their latest NLL Championship by raising their 2014 Championship Banner.
