Spokane Chiefs News Release

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Prince George Cougars used two goals from forward Jari Erricson to propel themselves to a 6-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs at Spokane Arena on Saturday Night. Chiefs' forward Liam Stewart scored twice in the loss, but Spokane could not overcome a 4-0 deficit early in the 3rd Period and lost their second straight game, falling to 2-1-1-0 on the year.

The Cougars got the scoring underway late in the 1st, with 19-year-old forward Chase Witala lifting a backhand over Chiefs' starting goaltender Garret Hughson to give Prince George a 1-0 lead at the 17:56 mark. Witala finished the game with 1 goal and 3 assists.

Prince George added to their lead in the 2nd Period, using the first of the two goals scored by Erricson and a shorthanded breakaway goal put in by Jansen Harkins. The puck took an odd bounce at the blue line and Harkins took advantage going the other way, beating Hughson to his glove side to take a 3-0 lead into the 2nd Intermission.

Chiefs' rookie goaltender Tyson Verhelst replaced Hughson to start the 3rd Period and the Cougars scored early as Erricson scored his second goal just 36 seconds in.

Spokane got on the board at the 1:36 mark of the 3rd as Liam Stewart was able to beat Cougars goaltender Ty Edmonds to cut the lead to 4-1. Calder Brooks, recently acquired in a trade with Prince Albert, scored his first point as a Chief with an assist on the goal. Prince George answered quickly, with forward David Soltes scoring just 15 seconds later to extend the lead back to 4.

Stewart scored his second goal of the night, a power play goal, at the 6:55 mark of the 3rd after Detroit Red Wings prospect Marc McNulty went off for interference. Brooks earned his second assist on the goal, with Jason Fram also recording an assist. Soltes capped the scoring with his second goal at 13:35 of the final period.

Hughson stopped 14 of 17 shots in two periods while Verhelst stopped 16 of 19 shots in the final period. Edmonds stopped 21 of 23 for Prince George, earning his 3rd win of the year.

Spokane was 1 for 4 on the power play and 6 for 7 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs return to Spokane Arena on Friday, October 10 for Washington's Lottery Night at Spokane Arena.
