Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club would like to congratulate 16-year-old rookies Jake Bean and Beck Malenstyn on being named to the Canadian roster for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The tournament, to be played in Sarnia-Lambton, Ontario from October 31 - November 8, 2014, will be the first to feature three Canadian national teams; Canada Black, Canada Red and Canada White. From 1986 to 2014, Canada was represented by five regional teams: Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec and West.
Bean and Malenstyn will both suit up for Canada Black. The tournament also features entries from Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United States, with two groups of four teams. All eight teams will qualify for the quarter-finals, with the winners advancing to the semifinals.
Malenstyn, a 6-1, 184-pound forward from Delta, British Columbia, spent the majority of the 2013-14 season with Okanagan Hockey Academy Midget Prep, recording 33 goals and 26 assists for 59 points in 45 games played. He was selected by Calgary in the first round, 18th overall, in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
Bean, a 6-0, 175-pound defenceman, appeared in 57 games with the Edge School Elite 15 in 2013-14 and finished the season as the team's top point-producing defenceman with 27 goals and 42 assists. In February, the Calgary, Alberta product received the Canadian Sport School Hockey League's Elite 15 Top Defenceman award.
Both players attended Hockey Canada's National Under-17 Summer Development Camp held July 29 - August 4 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
The Hitmen return to action Friday night at Rexall Place for a 7:00 p.m. tilt against the Edmonton Oil Kings (Sportsnet 960, Shaw TV, Shaw Direct Channel 299) before returning to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday, Oct. 4, to host the Kootenay Ice at 7:00 p.m.
Calgary Hitmen season tickets for the 20th anniversary season are available now at the Scotiabank Saddledome box office. In appreciation for the continued support the Hitmen receive from the community, the purchase or renewal of select 2014-15 season ticket packages will include a complimentary 20th anniversary premium jersey.
