Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates are excited to re-introduce the Portland Pirates Foundation. The Portland Pirates Foundation is an active 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, representing the philanthropic arm of Portland Pirates LLC . Pirate players and staff are looking forward to actively pursuing their mission to create a better community for everyone they work with. "As a leader in the community, we embrace the ability to provide support for the various charitable organizations in and around Portland. The Foundation will provide another opportunity to create a better life for all in need of our support," said Pirates owner Ron Cain.
Prior to the Pirates' home opener on Saturday, October 11, the Foundation will be presenting its first charitable donation to Camp Sunshine which is located in Casco, Maine. The Pirates held their first-annual Charity Golf Tournament this past summer in conjunction with the Foundation. The tournament, which raised $10,000, was attended by several members of the 1993-1994 Calder Cup champion team.
Camp Sunshine was founded in 1984 and its mission is to provide respite, support, joy, and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families from around the world through the various stages of their journeys. The year-round program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Camp Sunshine also provides bereavement sessions for families who have lost a child to supported illnesses. Camp Sunshine relies on more than 2,500 volunteers annually, many of whom return year after year.
