Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release

Fort Lauderdale, FL (October 1, 2014) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers will recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month during Saturday night's match against the Carolina Railhawks. The team has partnered with Susan G. Komen and will donate $5 of every ticket purchased online using the promotion code KOMEN back to Susan G. Komen. The team will also recognize a group of breast cancer survivors during half-time of the match.

Two Strikers players have been touched by the effects of breast cancer and are very involved in fund-raising for the cause. Chris Nurse lost his mother to breast cancer when he was just 20 years old. Since then, he has personally raised over $10,000 for Susan G. Komen.

"It was a turning point in my life," said Nurse. "My mom would always tell people that I was going to be a professional soccer player when I was growing up, and when she passed away I felt like I was obliged to see it through and make it happen. It was my motivation to becoming a professional soccer player."

Justin Chavez just recently found out that his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and she is currently undergoing treatment.

"It's been hard for me obviously, because I can't be there physically for her, but I talk to her every day," said Chavez. "So far she's doing well, doing her treatment, and the doctor has said things are looking good."

Chavez has set up a fund where anyone can donate to help his mom pay for medical bills. Anyone interested in donating can go to gofundme.com/supportjuanita.

In honor of breast cancer awareness, the team will warm up with a pink shirt prior to the game, and will wear pink socks during the match. The corner flags will also be pink for the match.

The Strikers will also participate in the "Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure" at Bayfront Park in Miami on October 18th. Anyone interested in participating in the race can visit the Susan G. Komen tent prior to the Strikers' October 4th match or go to www.komenmiaftl.org for additional information.
