Switch to Battalion Makes Huether Happy

North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Ray Huether is about to experience another side of the North Bay Battalion's rivalry with the Sudbury Wolves.

The Battalion acquired Huether, 20, from Sudbury in a trade Monday. He played 131 Ontario Hockey League games over two seasons with the Wolves, scoring 16 goals and earning 31 assists for 47 points.

"It was good to be out there again and to get back in the groove," said right-shot centre Huether, who arrived in the Gateway City in time for practice Tuesday.

Huether joins defencemen Marcus McIvor and Brenden Miller to fill out the team's overage quota after the Monday trade of centre Jamie Lewis to the Windsor Spitfires. Huether, who's to make his Battalion debut at 7 p.m. Friday against the visiting Peterborough Petes, won't have to wait long to face the Wolves, as North Bay visits Sudbury at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"It'll be a little weird playing against my former teammates, but you have to move on. I'm excited to start a new season with the Battalion."

Huether, who was acquired for a fourth-round pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, played preseason games with Sudbury but was the odd man out when the club committed its three overage spots to left wingers Nathan Pancel and Brody Silk and defenceman Jeff Corbett.

Huether, six-foot-two and 200 pounds, returned home to Londesborough, Ont., a small community southeast of Goderich, to await a trade.

"It was pretty nerve-wracking. I thought I might have to find a place to play junior A. I got lucky to get this chance with the Battalion. It's a great opportunity, and I'm going to make the most of it. I see myself as a two-way player who can bring a lot of energy to the table."

A fifth-round pick of the Saginaw Spirit in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection, Huether played seven games with Saginaw in 2010-11, earning one assist, before being traded to the Barrie Colts on June 13, 2011. He never played for the Colts and was traded to Sudbury on Aug. 30, 2012.

He said he was surprised to be returning to Northern Ontario.

"I never thought I'd be heading back up north. When I played for Sudbury the Battalion was a rival, so it's a little different."

But he said he received a warm reception upon joining the Troops.

"The guys were really welcoming. It seems like a really good group of guys."

Huether has ample service against the Battalion. He registered three points, including two goals, in 14 regular-season games against both Brampton and North Bay and was with the Wolves when they eliminated Brampton in five games in an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series in 2012-13.

In other news, Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach, announced that right winger Alex Henriksson has been appointed an alternate captain, joining Miller and left winger Nick Paul under captain McIvor.

A first-round pick in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, Henriksson, a 19-year-old from Skovde, Sweden, played 68 games last season, scoring 11 goals and adding 17 assists for 28 points. He recorded 10 points, including seven goals, in 17 playoff games.

Henriksson is the second import to be named an alternate captain with the franchise. The first was Czech defenceman Rostislav Klesla, who served in the capacity in 2000-01.
