San Antonio's Elizondo Headlines International Performances with Game-Winning Goal In Atlanta

September 30, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release

NEW YORK (September 30, 2014) - Costa Rican midfielder Cesar Elizondo headlined the group of international players that starred in Week 12 of the North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season, hitting the game-winner for the San Antonio Scorpions in their 1-0 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday.

Elizondo's goal ended the Scorpions' four-game winless streak away from home, keeping them just two points from first-place Minnesota United FC in the NASL Fall Season Standings. The Scorpions continue to edge closer to clinching one of the three remaining spots in The Championship, the league's four-team postseason tournament.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Uruguayan midfielder Enzo Martinez assisted on the game-winner for the Carolina RailHawks, as they topped Indy Eleven, 1-0, in front of another sellout crowd (12th consecutive) at IUPUI's Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The result gave RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke - a native of Northern Ireland - his league-leading 47th victory in the NASL modern era.

On Sunday, English forward Tomi Ameobi scored off an assist from Jamaican midfielder Horace James to earn FC Edmonton a 1-1 draw against the visiting New York Cosmos at Clarke Stadium. Norwegian forward Mads Stokkelien continued his fine form, registering the assist on the Cosmos' lone goal.

Brazilian midfielder Daniel Mendes found the net for Minnesota United FC in its 3-2 win over Ottawa Fury FC on Sunday. Mendes' countryman, midfielder Juliano Vicentini, picked up an assist in the game, helping United extend its unbeaten streak to four games. Irish midfielder Richie Ryan scored for Fury FC on a free kick in the 3-2 loss.

Every week throughout the 2014 Season, the NASL puts its international stars - both coaches & players - under the 'NASL International Spotlight,' which focuses on the league's overseas connections.
