Real Salt Lake Update

Real Salt Lake News Release

REAL SALT LAKE TO HOST USL PRO CHAMPIONS SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC TOMORROW

Real Salt Lake will host USL PRO Champions Sacramento Republic FC in an exhibition match at Rio Tinto Stadium on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. MT. The Sept. 30 game will be streamed live on RealSaltLake.com and will be broadcast locally on ESPN 700.

The Claret-and-Cobalt's exhibition match is already included in the RSL season ticket package and parking pass booklet as "BONUS GAME B." Tickets to the game are available at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at www.realsaltlake.com/tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700.

The Sept. 30 matchup marks the first-ever meeting between Sacramento Republic FC and Real Salt Lake. The California club wrapped up its inaugural year with USL PRO by claiming the Championship with a 2-0 win over Harrisburg City Islanders this past weekend. The club has found widespread success in its first year, breaking the USL PRO regular season attendance with over 158,000 fans in 2014, crushing the previous record of 112,748 set by Orlando City Soccer Club. The club is coached by MLS two-time scoring champion and former Chivas USA and Toronto FC head coach, Preki Radosavljeviæ. The club's roster also includes former Real Salt Lake FW Justin Braun.

Real Salt Lake has faced three lower division teams already this year, two of which were USL PRO. The Claret-and-Cobalt was knocked out of the 2014 U.S. Open Cup in its opening match after falling 2-1 at NASL's Atlanta Silverbacks on June 14. The RSL Reserves then played USL PRO Richmond Kickers to a scoreless draw in Richmond on July 6 and fell 5-2 to fellow USL side Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 25.

CLARET-AND-COBALT HEAD TO CALIFORNIA TO TAKE ON CHIVAS USA

Real Salt Lake returns to MLS action on Sunday, when it faces Chivas USA at 5:00 p.m. MT at StubHub Center. Sunday's match will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN 700 and 102.3 La Gran D FM.

The Claret-and-Cobalt enters Sunday's contest looking to clinch a playoff berth for the seventh consecutive season. RSL was unable to do so in its last MLS match, a 2-1 defeat at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sept. 27. RSL DF Nat Borchers opened up the scoring in the 57th minute, heading home a corner kick taken by MF Javier Morales. Vancouver was able to claw its way back in the game, with captain Pedro Morales converting a PK in the 62nd minute and scoring the game-winner in the 78th minute to snatch the win. The Claret-and-Cobalt will need a draw or a win in California in order to qualify for the MLS postseason. RSL remains third in the Western Conference with a 13-7-10 record and total of 49 points, eight points behind league leaders Seattle Sounders FC and LA Galaxy.

Sunday's contest will be the second regular season meeting between Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA. The two sides last met on June 28 at StubHub Center, a 1-0 defeat for the Claret-and-Cobalt, also the club's first loss to Chivas USA on the road since 2009. Real Salt Lake was reduced to ten men in the ninth minute, with MF Luke Mulholland seeing straight red after a tackle on Chivas USA MF Martin Rivero. Chivas USA went on to take the lead in the 35th minute behind a spectacular goal scored by FW Erick Torres.

Real Salt Lake posts a 12-11-4 all-time regular season record against the Red-and-White and a 13-11-5 record across all competitions. The Claret-and-Cobalt has gone 6-8-1 on the road against Chivas USA in regular season play.

The SoCal club enters Sunday's match coming off a 4-2 loss at Seattle Sounders FC. Chivas USA has struggled mightily this season with a 6-18-6 record and total of 24 points. The Goats are currently riding a seven-game losing streak in MLS action.

Real Salt Lake will return home following Sunday's contest, playing host to San Jose Earthquakes on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN 700 and 102.3 La Gran D FM.

REAL SALT LAKE FALLS 2-1 AT VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC

Real Salt Lake (13-7-10, 49 points, West #3), fell 2-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9-8-13, 40 points, West #5) at BC Place on Saturday afternoon.

Real Salt Lake took the lead in the 57th minute when DF Nat Borchers headed home a corner kick taken by MF Javier Morales. RSL was unable to sustain the lead however, conceding twice as Vancouver Captain Pedro Morales converted his second PK attempt in the 62nd minute and notched the game-winner in the 78th minute to grab the win.

Real Salt Lake backup GK Jeff Attinella, came up huge for the Claret-and-Cobalt in the 45th minute, saving Pedro Morales' penalty kick to keep the score level at 0-0. RSL FW Alvaro Saborio was whistled for the controversial PK in the 45th minute, when Chapman called the Costa Rican international for a foul in the box during a Vancouver corner kick. Attinella bailed RSL out, stopping the PK by correctly diving to his right and blocking Morales' shot.

Real Salt Lake almost took the lead in the 57th minute. RSL MF Luis Gil worked his way into the box on the left side and played a square pass to RSL's Morales at the center of the area. The Argentine flicked the ball and half-volleyed a shot that forced a great diving save from Ousted, pushing the ball out for a corner kick.

RSL went on to score from the ensuing corner kick in the same minute. Morales took the corner, whipping a ball into the box that Borchers headed to the far post to give the Claret-and-Cobalt a 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last long however, as RSL was called for a second penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Claret-and-Cobalt DF Carlos Salcedo was whistled for the foul in the box on Vancouver FW Erik Hurtado. The Vancouver captain got a chance to redeem himself, as Morales coolly slotted his second PK attempt into the bottom left corner.

The Whitecaps went on to take the lead in the 78th minute. Vancouver substitute Kekuta Manneh torched his way to the touch line on the left side, playing the ball back through the area that rolled untouched to the top of the box. Vancouver DF Steven Beitashour ran onto it and sent a shot to the far corner that Pedro Morales redirected right in front of goal past a helpless Attinella.
