Saginaw Spirit Record First Victory of the 2014-15 Regular Season

The Saginaw Spirit recorded their first win at the Dow Event Center for the 2014-15 regular season in overtime against the Sarnia Sting 4-3.
The Saginaw Spirit turned in a good first period, outshooting the Sarnia Sting 16-9. The teams exchanged power plays throughout the first half, and the Spirit found the back of the net at 13:19 with a power play goal by Luke Cairns. Assists on the goal went to Sean Callaghan and Marcus Crawford. Sarnia retaliated shortly after when Vladislav Kodola tied the game 1-1 at 15:02 in the first. Jakob Chychrun and Pavel Zacha assisted the play.
The Spirit added two goals in the second period to take the lead over Sarnia 3-1. Mitchell Stephens beat Sarnia's starting goaltender Justin Fazio and broke the tie at 8:31 of the second on an even strength goal. Assists on the play went to Luke Cairns and Marcus Crawford. Blake Clarke added the third goal for the Spirit while shorthanded at the 13:42 mark. Shots on goal after the second period were 17- 10 Sarnia.
Sarnia caught up to the Spirit early in the third with a goal by Davis Brown, assisted by Troy Lajeunesse and Alex Renaud at the 4:16 mark to cut the score 3-2. Vladislav Kodola tied the score with his second goal of the game at 15:39. Assists on the play went to Jakob Chychrun and Patrick White. Saginaw led in shots on goal 14-12 in the third.
After 60 minutes of play the teams went into a sudden death overtime to settle the game. Mitchell Stephens recorded his second goal of the game, shoving in the winning goal at the 3:24 mark of the overtime period. The assists on the play went to Marcus Crawford and Nick Moutrey. Final shots on goal favored Saginaw 45-38.
The Saginaw Spirit will head to the Essar Centre to take on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for the Spirit's first road game of the 2014-15 season on Wednesday, October 1st at 7:07 p.m. The Spirit will return to the Dow Event Center on Saturday, October 11th when they host the London Knights. Puck is set to drop at 7:11 p.m.
