Mississauga Steelheads News Release

MISSISSAUGA, ON - After a tightly played first round playoff series last season, the Steelheads needed no extra motivation to get up for their home opener against the Oshawa Generals. The Steelheads were quick to the attack in front of the home crowd with a number of good chances early on. It would be the newest Steelhead, Brandon Devlin that would get the Steelheads on the board. Acquired via trade on Thursday, Devlin's point shot beat Generals' goalie Jeremy Brodeur to put the home team up 1-0. The Steelheads didn't let up, continuing the pressure through the first. Brodeur stood tall and was able to limit the scoring to just one. Shots on goal after the first period were 13-5 in favour of Mississauga.

The Generals came out strong in the second period, firing off six straight shots to start the frame. Amidst the flurry, Spencer Martin made a highlight reel save, reaching behind him to swat away the puck with his paddle and keep the Steelheads up 1-0. Despite drawing even in shots, Martin was able to keep the Generals off the board in the 2nd. Feeding off Martin, the Steelheads struck again, when Everett Clark buried a puck into an empty cage as a cross-crease feed from Cody Thompson froze Brodeur. Bobby MacIntyre had the other assist on the goal. After some undisciplined play by the Generals, the Steelheads took advantage again, this time on the power play as Sean Day scored his first of the season on a shot through traffic. Assists on the goal went to Josh Burnside and Stefan LeBlanc. Oshawa attempted to ramp up their offensive play, but Martin was ready for them, stopping two big chances in the final minutes to keep the score 3-0 after 2. Shots on goal were even at 22 after 40 minutes of play.

The Steelheads started the third like they finished the second as Day hit the score sheet again, scoring his second of the game; this time from Devlin and Jesse Barwell to put the Steelheads up 4-0. It would be Chris Carlisle that broke Martin's shutout on Oshawa's 25th shot of the game with assists to Sam Harding and Tobias Lindberg. A few minutes later, Michael Turner scored a goal that was under review, but ultimately ruled a good goal to pull the Generals within 2. With just under three minutes left in regulation, Oshawa pulled their goaltender, and it would work out to their advantage as Bradley Latour netted his second goal in as many nights to pull Oshawa within one with 1:39 on the clock. Oshawa poured on the shots and Martin was showing strokes of brilliance as he flashed the leather to preserve the one goal lead. With less than a minute to play, and Brodeur again pulled, Josh Sterk brought Oshawa all the way back, tying the game at 4-4; Mitchell Vande Sompel and Bradley Latour assisted on the game tying goal. Shots on goal were 39-25 in favour of Oshawa through regulation.

After a hit to the head on Jesse Barwell as time expired in regulation, the Steelheads would begin overtime with the man-advantage. The Steelheads would capitalize, as Brandon Devlin got his second goal of the game, to give Mississauga the exciting opening night victory, bringing the crowd to its feet.

The Steelheads return home Friday, October 3rd to host the Niagara IceDogs in a 7:30 pm start at the Hershey Centre. Be sure to follow the team on Twitter (@OHLSteelheads) Facebook (/Steelheadsohl) and Instagram (mississaugasteelheadsohl).
