NASHVILLE- A little over a month ago the Nashville Venom was crowned the Professional Indoor Football League Champions. Today General Manager/Head Coach Billy Back announced the re-signing of an important part to his defense. Walter Thomas agreed to terms to play for the Venom in 2015. Last season Thomas had six solo tackles and 13 assists. The 6'7 345 pound defensive tackle from Oklahoma State had 10 QB hurries, batted three passes and recovered a fumble for the PIFL's top rated defense.
"Getting Walter signed was a priority for us once the horn blew at the championship game," said Back. Anyone that knows football knows how important it is to have a guy to clog the middle up on defense. Walter was an intricate part of our success on defense. Also, in this league you need versatility. He can play almost every line position on both sides of the ball. Some guys on our team got post-season recognition because of Walter. Having him around makes it easy to coach defense."
Because Thomas commanded a double team on most plays, defensive line mates James Frazier and Wayne Daniels were freed up to make plays. Both were named All-PIFL. Linebacker Cobran'i Mixon also benefited from Thomas' play. Thomas made it tough for offensive linemen to get to the second level so Mixon was able to make plays. Mixon was named to the first team All-PIFL. Thomas' ability to get an inside rush forced bad throws by opposing QBs. Defensive backs Scooter Rogers and Correy Stewart took advantage of that, intercepted a combined 16 passes and were named All-PIFL.
"It feels good to get this done," said Thomas. "The team is a brotherhood and I enjoyed every moment we share together. Nashville is a good place to be and the fans showed us a lot of love. I want to keep this going. Defending our championship will be challenging. I am ready to get started with that challenge."
