Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE , INDIANA)--The Evansville Otters announced today that the Minnesota Twins have purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Jose Velez. Velez was 2-5 with a 2.53 ERA in 30 games with the Otters in 2014.

Velez, 25, tied a franchise record with 16 strikeouts in seven innings against Windy City on August 27. He made 25 relief appearances before joining the starting rotation in August.

"Jose is a great example of the opportunity the frontier league gives young players. His maturity, physical ability, and experience all had a chance to excel in the league," said Otters manager Andy McCauley. " He threw in a number of roles for us this year and was a big reason for our successful season. I am very happy for Jose, and wish him the best of luck with the Twins organization."

Velez is the fourth Evansville pitcher to be signed by an affiliated team this season, following Terance Marin (White Sox), Robert Ramer (Giants), and Chad James (Rangers).

The Tampa native attended Alma College in Michigan.

The Evansville Otters finished with a 57-37 record in 2014. The 57 wins were a franchise record. The Otters returned to the playoffs for the first time since winning the Frontier League Championship in 2006.
