Topeka Pilots News Release

The RoadRunners are off to a blistering start having swept through the NAHL Showcase with four wins in four days. Matej Tomek's play in net and Jasen Fernsler's work on offense was recognized by the league and Easton, garnering South Star of the Week and an honorable mention respectively.

From Alex Kyrias/NAHL.com - Every NAHL Showcase seems to produce breakout stars and such was the case for 17-year-old goalie Matej Tomek of the Topeka RoadRunners. Topeka went undefeated in the event thanks in large part to Tomek (6'3/180), who posted shutouts in both of his starts. On Thursday, the native of Bratislava, Slovakia made 27 saves in a 4-0 win against Johnstown. The next day, Tomek made 19 saves in a 4-0 win over the Michigan Warriors. Tomek's save percentage of 97.3% and goals against average of .67 rank 2nd in both catagories in NAHL goaltending. "Matej may be young, but he is a very mature, very composed and very calm goalie for someone who is just 17-years-old," said Topeka head coach Scott Langer. "He has great rebound control and he is a tremendous competitor when he steps onto that ice."

Fernsler, who received an honorable mention the previous week, earned another this week after a very strong showcase for Topeka. With two assists against Johnstown and a third against Michigan, the second-year RoadRunner capped off his trip to Blaine with two goals and another two assists in the showcase finale against Kenai River. The end of the week found him tied for 5th in the league in scoring, just two points behind the leaders. "Jasen has really stepped up in the leadership department this year," said Langer. "This is his second showcase and he used his experience and poise to help set the tone for us."

The RoadRunners travel to Wichita Falls for two games this Friday (7pm) and Saturday (1pm). Fans can see the games locally at The Lazy Toad Restaurant on the 26th and at Skinny's Sports Bar & Grill on the 27th. All games this season are also broadcast live on Sports Radio 1490 KTOP. The RoadRunners return to Landon Arena next weekend (Oct. 3rd and 4th) to face the Amarillo Bulls.
