Knights Sign Bellarmine Star

The Corvallis Knights have signed Bellarmine University junior outfielder Jes Staples for the 2015 season. He is a 5-foot-11, 160-pound lefty from Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kent.

He hit .330 and led Bellarmine with 63 hits, five triples, 16 steals and 33 runs in 2014. He also had 19 multi-hit games and won a gold glove for his outfield defensive work. As a pitcher, he was 1-2 with a 0.93 ERA in seven games, with 12 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Staples played for the Lexington Hustlers in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League in 2014. He hit .310, with 36 hits, 10 steals, 10 RBIs, and 20 runs scored in 27 games. He made the all-star team, had 12 multi-hit games overall and five three-hit games.

Also, four members of the 2014 Corvallis Knights and one alum from the 2013 squad were named to Perfect Game's list of the top 20 pro prospects from the 2014 West Coast League season.

First-team all-WCL utility man Dalton Kelly of UC Santa Barbara was ranked No. 5 and starting pitcher Justin Calomeni of Cal Poly was ranked No. 9. They were ranked No. 5 and No. 7 by Baseball America last week.

Washington senior right-handed closer Brandon Choate was ranked No. 10 and catcher Logan Ice, an Oregon State sophomore, was rated No. 14. First baseman Gabe Clark of Victoria, an OSU junior who played on the Knights' 2013 WCL championship team, was rated No. 17.
