Clark's late heroics deny Revs as five-game win streak is snapped in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio - When the ball left Charlie Davies' foot, he thought he'd pulled the Revolution level.

With the visiting Revs trailing the Columbus Crew 1-0 in the 87th minute of Saturday night's showdown, Davies had a clear path to goal when he pounced on Chris Tierney's block of Michael Parkhurst's clearance attempt.

He took a couple touches, shaped to shoot and curled his effort toward the far post. And the shot would've found its way inside that post if it weren't for the acrobatic effort of Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark, who got his fingertips on the ball to push it around the woodwork and secure all three points for Columbus.

"I would've bet anything on it that that was going to hit the back of the net," said Davies. "Kudos to Clark to make such a great save when his team needed him. It's unfortunate for me just because the team needed me to put that one away and I've got to put that in the back of the net."

The reason the Revs even required an equalizer was because, once again, Federico Higuain conjured up a bit of magic from a set piece. Just as he'd done three previous times against the Revs, Higuain curled home a sumptuous free kick in the 48th minute to put the Revolution in a hole for the fourth straight game.

Only this time the Revs weren't able to find a response, making it all the more frustrating that they were beaten by something they'd spoken about at length throughout the course of the week.

"We talked about it and it's real disappointing that we did that," said head coach Jay Heaps.

Despite the loss, New England remains in third place in the East, although the Crew and New York Red Bulls are now nipping at the Revolution's heels after winning on Saturday night.

Still, next Friday night's nationally-televised showdown with Sporting Kansas City sets up as a battle for second place in the conference, and the Revs know that a result at Sporting Park would be the perfect response to seeing their five-game winning streak snapped at Crew Stadium.

"We've just got to watch this game over, see where we made the mistakes and get ready for Kansas City, because in reality, that's the big one for us," said Davies. "We've got to put this one behind us, move on and really step it up for Kansas City. If we can get a result there, then all is forgotten and we can move forward as a team."
