Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

HALIFAX - Adam Marsh scored twice and set up the overtime winner to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 6-5 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Saturday at Scotiabank Centre.

The Chicago-native appeared to complete a hat trick with the deflection of a Thomas Chabot slap shot for the game-winning goal 1:04 into the extra period, but official scorers gave the goal to the second-year defenceman instead.

Mitchell Dempsey also scored twice for Saint John (2-1-0-1) while Julien Tessier added a single.

Timo Meier and Connor Moynihan had two goals apiece for Halifax (1-2-1-0) and Ryan Falkenham had one.

The Sea Dogs have won two games in a row. The Mooseheads have lost two straight.

A game summary can be found HERE.

Halifax jumped on the board on a power play just four-and-a-half minutes into the first period. Maxime Fortier found the rebound of a Meier shot from the right side and fed a backhand pass to Falkenham, who buried a high shot past Saint John goalie Sebastien Auger.

The Moose doubled its lead with eight minutes left when Moynihan finished off a short cross-crease pass from Samuel Leblanc on a brief 2-on-0 rush.

Halifax returned to the power play before the end of the period. Meier concluded a nice passing play with a one-time shot from the inside edge of the left circle that got past Auger's glove.

Halifax led 3-0 after one period.

It took only 25 seconds for the Sea Dogs to get on the board in the middle frame.

Captain Olivier LeBlanc fired a shot from the right point that Tessier tipped past Mooseheads' goalie Kevin Resop to make it a 3-1 game.

Just over two minutes later, Dempsey came off the Saint John bench, chased down a loose puck in the middle of the Halifax zone, walked in alone and ripped a shot past the blocker of Resop for his first QMJHL goal.

The Sea Dogs thought they had tied the game on a two-man advantage with about seven minutes left in the period as import winger Juraj Siska inched toward the net from the right side and stuffed the puck through Resop. But referee Devin Piccott waved it off immediately, indicating a Saint John player had been in the goal crease.

Saint John did tie the game with fewer than four minutes remaining in the second period when Marsh, signed as a free agent during training camp, whistled a heavy wrist shot from the left wing that beat Resop high on the short side.

The Mooseheads countered two minutes later.

Meier stole the puck from defenceman Jack vanBoekel and fired a wrist shot past the glove hand of a surprised Auger to give Halifax a 4-3 lead.

Saint John used a power play chance to get back on even terms again just 23 seconds into the third period.

Nathan Noel fed a pass through the low slot from the right wing side that Dempsey was able to slide underneath Resop.

Moynihan's second goal came near the six-minute mark and concluded a pretty, three-way passing play.

But Saint John tied the game for the third time with six minutes to go.

Spencer Smallman led a 3-on-2 into the Mooseheads' zone. His first pass was blocked, so he threw the puck over to the left circle to Marsh, who sent a laser underneath the crossbar for a 5-5 tie.

In overtime, Marsh capped a four-point night - with father and former NHLer Peter Marsh watching in the crowd - by winning the faceoff that led to Chabot's winning shot from the left point.

Auger took home the win for Saint John with twenty saves. Resop made 27 stops in a losing cause for Halfax.

Marsh was named first star with two goals and two assists. Meier earned second star with two goals and three points, while Moynihan took third star with a pair of goals in front of 7,213 fans in attendance.
