Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A five-goal outburst during the second period on Saturday propelled the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 6-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Young Arena in the final exhibition game for both teams ahead of the 2014/15 United States Hockey League regular season.

Niko Hildenbrand's goal on an odd-man rush accounted for the only scoring during a quieter first period. At 9:06, Henrik Rommel and Rem Pitlick moved the puck from left to right, ultimately putting it on Hildenbrand's stick. The California native moved through the right circle and sent a shot to the top corner on the short side, over the glove of Ben Blacker.

Waterloo's big second period began at 4:41 when Nick Carbone's shot from below the left dot found its way into the net. Cedar Rapids drew back to within one at 5:59 when Andrew Gaus blasted a second opportunity past Hayden Lavigne.

The 2-1 count lasted for just over two minutes before the Hawks reeled off four straight. Thanks to Brock Boeser's takeaway in the neutral zone, Brandon Montour finished a chance, rocketing a puck to to the twine past Blacker's glove side. Larry Jungwirth built the margin at 9:21 with a shot which appeared to be stopped but trickled across the goal line. Within another three minutes, Boeser slipped in an opportunity during a power play. The fifth Waterloo tally during the frame was a put-back by Tyler Sheehy at 17:26.

The RoughRiders notched the only goal in the third, scoring at 5:36, when a cross-crease feed from Adam Gaudette setup a tap-in by Ross Colton. Waterloo still outshot Cedar Rapids 12-10 during the final period and 45-23 in total during the contest.
