Pats Dropped in Season Opener

Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (0-1-0-0) opened their season with a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Brandon Wheat Kings (1-0-0-0) on the road.

First Period

After killing off an early powerplay with help from goaltender Daniel Wapple, the Pats caught a break to score the first goal of the WHL Regular Season. Fresh out of the box, Braden Christoffer tried to centre only to have his pass ricochet off two skates and into the Wheat Kings goal just over three minutes in. The lead wouldn't stay on the board long as Ryan Pilon lifted a knuckling shot from the blue line that eluded Daniel Wapple to even up the contest. The 1-1 tie stayed on the board through the opening twenty as both teams came up empty on their powerplay chances (REG - 0/1, BDN - 0/2). Wapple was busy early and went on to make nine saves while Jordan Papirny turned away eight shots.

Second Period

The middle period tested the Brandon netminder early as Papirny was forced to turn away Logan McVeigh on a partial break. Austin Wagner nearly gave Regina the lead but hit the post before Tyler Coulter rang one off the Pats' crossbar. The Wheat Kings grabbed the league when pressure in the Regina zone turned the puck over. With one hand on his stick, Duncan Campbell shoveled the puck to Taylor Green who fired over Wapple's blocker to slide the lead in favour of Brandon. Shots sat with a 20-14 edge to the home side after the second.

Third Period

Entering the final frame down a goal, the Pats found their tying marker while down a man. With the Pats shorthanded, rookie Jared McAmmond chipped the puck up the boards and fired on a 2-on-1 to square the game. McAmmond had two goals in the pre-season, both coming shorthanded. The deadlock wouldn't last as Tyler Coulter moved in on a 2-on-1 and snapped one through to put Brandon up 3-2. The Pats pulled Wapple late to garner the extra attacker, but it proved fruitless as Braylon Shmyr took the puck away and flipped it down the ice to end the contest 4-2 Brandon. Final shots sat 30-25 for the Wheat Kings through sixty minutes.

The Pats return to Regina for the A&W Home Opener tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.ca, the Brandt Centre Box Office and Regina A&W locations.
