Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs have opened the home portion of their 2014-2015 season with a 5-1 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Harbour Station.

Nathan Noel led the Saint John (1-1-0-1) offence with a pair of goals while Olivier LeBlanc, Mark Tremaine and Mathieu Joseph also found the net.

Gabriel Gosselin scored the only goal for the Titan (1-2-0-0), which have dropped two straight games.

The Sea Dogs honoured their ten-year history prior to the start of the game, and named a new captain in defeceman Olivier LeBlanc.

The third-year Sea Dog got the crowd of 4,609 on its feet just 61 seconds into the game, ripping a high point shot over the left shoulder of Titan goaltender Jacob Brennan for a power play goal. Sea Dogs' first overall pick Luke Green notched his first career QMJHL point with a great pass to tee up the LeBlanc blast. Free agent signee Adam Marsh also notched his first point with the second assist, on a feed to Green from the side boards.

Gosselin tied the game at 4:59, as he cut into the slot in front of Saint John goalie Sebastien Auger and received a centering pass from Rothesay-native Mark Simpson. Gosselin had just enough weight on the shot to slide it between the pads of Auger and into the net.

Saint John regained the lead near the eight-minute mark when Tremaine tipped a point shot from Jack vanBoekel and got it underneath the crossbar for his first goal as a Sea Dog. The play was reviewed but the goal stood. vanBoekel and Daniel Del Paggio each earned assists for their first career points.

The Sea Dogs extended their lead to 3-1 midway through the second period as Samuel Dove-McFalls saw an initial chance denied, but then found Joseph all alone in front with an empty net. Joseph made no mistake, burying his first of the 2014-15 season.

Just over four minutes later, with the Sea Dogs on the power play, Noel sent a one-time slap shot from the left wing faceoff dot, off a Titan stick and past Brennan.

The Sea Dogs led 4-1 after two periods.

Acadie-Bathurst pulled Brennan with three minutes remaining to try and take extra advantage of a power play opportunity, but Saint John foiled the plan.

Noel concluded the night with his second goal of the game, an empty-net marker with under thirty seconds remaining.

Auger earned the win in goal with 24 saves. Brennan took the loss with 25 stops.

LeBlanc's goal earned him first star honours. Forward Mitchell Dempsey nabbed second star with four hits while Marsh's two assists gave him third star.
