Hawks Win on Boeser Effort

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Brock Boeser scored a goal in every period, and the Waterloo Black Hawks pulled away from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in a 6-3 exhibition decision Friday at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The Black Hawks converted both of their power plays in the opening 20 minutes for the only scoring during the first period. A neat exchange between Tyler Sheehy and Hayden Shaw along the left wing boards allowed the puck to come to Boeser, who flipped a shot into the net, beginning his hat trick performance 3:09 into the action. Brandon Montour's tally at 17:39 came from farther away; following a faceoff win, the Waterloo defenseman sent a shot through traffic and inside the long-side post past netminder Ben Blacker.

Cedar Rapids drew back within a goal during the second period, potting their first goal at 7:17 as Andrew Gaus slipped behind the Hawks' defense and lifted a shot in off the crossbar. The Hawks reestablished a two-goal lead during four-on-four play at 10:20 when Boeser knocked in a chance during a goalmouth scramble. But at 18:52 - just two seconds after a Waterloo penalty had ended but before the Hawks had functionally returned to full strength - Adam Gaudette swatted a second try past goalie Ryland Pashovitz.

The RoughRiders tied the contest 2:48 into the third before the Hawks pulled away with three unanswered. The equalizer came from Alex Jasiek on a deflected shot which bounced in. Tom Novak forced a turnover at the Cedar Rapids blue line, then set up Boeser for the eventual Waterloo winner at 6:19. Just over eight minutes later, Novak went to the net himself in a three-on-one situation and stickhandled in a soft backhander. Rem Pitlick capped the victory in the final minute, blasting a shot to the top corner during a late power play.

Early next week, the Black Hawks coaching staff will make their final roster decisions ahead of the first 2014/15 regular season game on Friday, September 26th. When Waterloo hosts the Fargo Force that night, the Hawks will commemorate their Anderson Cup championship with a pregame banner unveiling. Tickets are on sale from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
