Boomers Down Rascals To Claim League Championship

September 17, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

The Schaumburg Boomers claimed the Frontier League crown for the second consecutive year by downing the River City Rascals 6-2 Wednesday night in Schaumburg. The loss put an end to an otherwise-wonderful season for the Western Division champion Rascals.

Kyle Brady took the hill for the Rascals to start and just did not have his best stuff. The righty from Cincinatti hit two batters on his way to surrendering three runs while recording just one out in the first inning. He was replaced by Nick Kennedy, who surrendered another run in the third to make it a 4-0 Boomers lead.

It was a different story for Boomers starter Seth Webster. Webster was perfect through three and did not surrender a run until the fifth, when Eric Williams singled home Jon Myers. Schaumburg got that run back in the sixth though when Joe De Pinto smacked an RBI double off of lefty Patrick Crider. That widened the gap back to four.

Schaumburg got another in the seventh on a homerun by Tony Delmonico to put it out of reach. The Rascals got an RBI single from Blaise Fernandez that scored Jon Myers in the ninth, but ultimately fell by the final of 6-2.

Every Boomer except for Justin Vasquez had at least one hit and everyone besides Michael Valadez had an RBI or scored a run. Brady got the loss, while Webster got the win. Boomers shortstop Gerard Hall, who finished the championship series with six hits and five RBI, was named series MVP.

Despite failing to capture the league championship crown, it was still a very successful season for the Rascals. They won 61 games during the regular season, captured the Western Division crown, and sent six players to MLB-affiliated minor league clubs. They will return for the 2015 season in May.
