Tomahawks Open Showcase with 3-2 Win over Wings

The Johnstown Tomahawks opened the 2014 NAHL Showcase Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over the Aberdeen Wings. Andrew Romano scored and added an assist, while Jake Gwillim earned the win in his Tomahawks debut.

Andrew Romano opened the scoring for the Tomahawks, deflecting a shot from Steve Quagliata over the shoulder of Aberdeen goaltender Chad Catt at 5:37. The goal was Romano's first goal as a member of the Tomahawks.

Alex Jaeckle extended the Tomahawks lead at 4:35 of the second period, taking a pass from Tanner Barnes and firing a shot through traffic and off the crossbar for his first goal of the season. Barnes assist on the power-play goal gives him three points in the first two games of the season.

Zach Zech extended the Tomahawks lead to three goals, taking a wide-open pass from Shane Cuckovich before firing a wrist shot past Catt for a power-play goal at 11:58 of the third period.

Less than 30 seconds later, Kyle Haak got the Wings on the board with a wraparound shot into the far side of the Tomahawks net. Ronnie Hein and Jack Nile each added an assist on the goal.

The Wings cut the deficit to one goal as Ronnie Hein's shot hit off the Gwillim's leg and landed in the net with 1:44 remaining in the third period. Bjorn Sigurdarson provided the assist on the goal.

Gwillim earned the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Chad Catt took the loss, allowing three goals on 19 shots. The Tomahawks went 2-for-4 on the power play, while going a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Tomahawks play their second game of the showcase Thursday morning against the Topeka Roadrunners. Face-off is set for 11 a.m. EST from the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
