Boomers Blow Out Rascals To Take Series Edge

September 16, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

The Schaumburg Boomers shellacked the River City Rascals 11-2 Tuesday night to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five Frontier League championship series. Eddie Cody tossed a complete game eight-hitter, and the Boomers laid it on Rascals starter Tommy Mendoza and reliever Chandler Jagodzinski for ten runs in the first five innings to bring the Boomers within one win of claiming the Frontier crown for the second consecutive year.

The dark night for the Rascals actually started out as a promising one. The Rascals jumped out to an early lead, courtesy of an RBI single by Joe Staley that brought in Eric Williams. They got another in the second on a squeeze bunt by Williams to score Jon Myers and make it 2-0 in favor of River City.

But then the wheels came off for Tommy Mendoza. The Rascal righty gave up six hits and five runs in a disastrous second inning that featured five different Boomers picking up RBI. Mendoza surrendered another in the third and did not return for the fourth. The longtime pro finished with a line of 3 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Eddie Cody meanwhile started dealing. After giving up six hits in the first two innings, he would give up only two the rest of the way. He racked up ten strikeouts and went the distance to earn his second win of the postseason.

The Boomers made a number of stellar defensive efforts behind him to aid in the effort. Shortstop Gerard Hall made an incredible sliding catch on a Brian McConkey bloop hit down the left field line with two on in the fifth. His effort deprived McConkey of a potential RBI. A batter later, right fielder Bobby Martin would make a solid sliding catch of his own to rob Hector Crespo and finish the inning.

The Boomers tagged Chandler Jagodzinski for four runs in the fifth and then Tony Delmonico took Ryan Brockett deep in the eighth for Schaumburg's eleventh run of the contest. Bobby Martin and Joe De Pinto each finished with three RBI and Jordan Dean scored three runs in a big night for the Boomer offense.

The Rascals now must regroup before tomorrow's Game 4, which is now a do-or-die for the Rascals. Kyle Brady is expected to start for River City, while Seth Webster is expected to start for the Boomers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

If Game 5 is necessary, it will be played at T.R. Hughes. Tickets for the championship series are on sale now. Prices of individual tickets will remain the same as the regular season. Groups of 10 or more or any fan that purchases tickets online in advance using the playoff code "PLAYOFF" will receive a discounted ticket.
