IceDogs Lose to Spits in Shootout

September 16, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

A late goal by Jordan Maletta sent the game to a shootout, but the IceDogs fell 5-4 to the Windsor Spitfires Tuesday night in Thorold.

The first period started with a bang as the teams exchanged a pair of goals. Luke Kirwan got the scoring started for the Spitfires before Evan Krassey tied things up just over a minute later. Christopher Paquette's first OHL goal would give the IceDogs the lead until Ryan Foss knotted things up once again.

After four goals in the first, the Spitfires scored the only goal of the second frame. After the IceDogs had a goal waved off for goaltender interference, Trevor Murphy capitalized on a five-on-three with just over a minute remaining in the period.

A turnover midway through the third gave the IceDogs the chance they needed to draw even. Graham Knott fed Vince Dunn in the slot and he made no mistake firing it by Spitfires goaltender Alex Fotinos. Foss would pot his second of the night off a fluke bounce, but Maletta would send the crowd into a frenzy with a late power play goal.

Ben Hughes scored the only goal for the IceDogs in the shootout, while Luke Kirwan and Aaron Luchuk scored to give the Spitfires a 5-4 victory.

The IceDogs get the regular season started Sept. 26 with a trip to Sudbury to face the Wolves, before heading to Sault Ste. Marie to play the Greyhounds the following night.
