Windsor Spitfires News Release

(Thorold, ON) - Aaron Luchuk's shootout goal lifted the Spitfires to a 5-4 win over the Niagara IceDogs Tuesday night at the Thorold Arena, in the club's final preseaon game.

Luke Kirwan opened the scoring for the Spits, swooping in to grab a Ryan Moore rebound before beating Niagara goalie Stephen Dhillon, just shy of the five-minute mark of the first period.

Soon after, goals from Evan Krassey and Chris Paquette, in the span of 96 seconds, gave the home side a brief 2-1 lead, before Ryan Foss evened things up with a hard slapshot from the top of the left circle that beat Dhillon cleanly at 10:38, knotting the game at 2-2 after 20 minutes.

Goaltending took centre stage for the majority of the middle frame, with both Alex Fotinos and Dhillon making a series of dynamic saves. But eventually the Spits broke through to take the lead, as Trevor Murphy scored during a 5-on-3 advantage to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

A costly turnover late in the third period allowed the IceDogs to tie the game at 3-3. In the Niagara zone on a 1-on-2 rush, Chris Marchese lost the puck and Vince Dunn made him pay, taking a feed from Graham Knott and beating Alex Fotinos to tie the game at 3-3.

With less than three minutes to play, Ryan Foss banked home what looked to be the game winner at 17:08. But the Spits got into penalty trouble, opening the door for former Spitfire Jordan Maletta to score on a 5-on-3 Niagara advantage, tying the game one last time.
