Bridgeport Defeats Camden in Series Opener

(Camden, NJ. - September 16, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Camden Riversharks 8-1 on Tuesday evening at Campbell's Field.

Bridgeport jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Prentice Redman after center fielder James Simmons led off the inning with a walk. The 'Fish extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Casper Wells was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second base and scored on catcher Luis Rodriguez's one-out RBI single. Camden scored their lone run of the evening in the bottom of the fourth inning on left fielder Brian Van Kirk's two-out RBI single, cutting Bridgeport's lead to 2-1.

After scoreless fifth, sixth and seventh innings, Bridgeport extended their lead to 3-1 as Ramon Castro led off the inning with a single and scored on first baseman Luis Lopez's RBI single. Lopez later came around to score when right fielder Juan Martinez reached on an error with two outs, giving Bridgeport a 4-1 lead. The 'Fish broke it open late when they scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, highlighted on an RBI infield single by Mike Richard with the bases loaded and after Camden's third baseman Amadeo Zazueta threw the ball away from first baseman Jose Julio-Ruiz when trying to get Richard out at first, two more runs scored and Richard came home on an RBI double by Lopez to give Bridgeport an 8-1 lead.

For Bridgeport offensively, third baseman Sean Burroughs, Lopez and Redman each had three hits while Lopez added two RBI on the evening.

Matt Iannazzo (4-10) started for Bridgeport and picked up the win after allowing one run off six hits in seven innings of work while striking out four batters. Camden's starting pitcher Cesar Sanchez (0-3) took the loss for the Riversharks, allowing two runs off eight hits in six and a third innings pitched. Camden relievers Dan Blewett and Nick DeBarr each pitched an inning in relief and gave up two runs and four runs respectively.

Bridgeport will face Camden in game two of the three game series on Wednesday September 17th, with first pitch at 7:05pm.
