Lumberjacks Make Pair of Trades, Acquire Steven Merl from Madison

MUSKEGON, Michigan (September 16th) - The Muskegon Lumberjacks have announced two separate trades that the organization has made with the Madison Capitols and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, respectively, in which the team has dealt Forward Haralds Egle to the Capitols in exchange for Forward Steven Merl. In addition, the Lumberjacks have sent affiliate Goaltender Ryan Larkin to the RoughRiders in return for a fifth round pick in the 2015 USHL Phase Two Draft.

Merl, the Bloomfield, Michigan native, was a 3rd round pick (45th overall) by the Capitols during the 2014 USHL Phase Two Draft and spent the past two seasons with the Belle Tire hockey program totaling 13 goals and 24 assists in 74 games played. Before joining Belle Tire, Merl spent three seasons from 2009-12 with the Cleveland Barons youth hockey organization totaling 17 goals and 25 assists in 96 games played.

Egle, the Liepaja, Latvia native, heads to Madison after spending the 2013-14 season with the Lumberjacks recording four goals and three assists in 38 games played. Muskegon selected Egle with the 8th overall pick during the 2013 USHL Phase Two Draft.

Larkin was a 17th round pick (248th overall) by the Lumberjacks during the 2013 USHL Phase Two Draft and spent the last three seasons with the Honeybaked hockey program compiling a 21-15-8 record in 47 appearances to go along with a 2.24 goals-against average, a .895 save percentage, and five shutouts. The Clarkston, Michigan native has a commitment to Miami University following his junior career and is the younger brother of former Lumberjack and current freshman defenseman at Yale University Adam Larkin.

In an additional roster move, the Lumberjacks have released Forward Mike Maiden from the active roster. Maiden, the Garden City, Michigan native, was a 19th round pick (302nd overall) by the Lumberjacks during the 2014 USHL Phase Two Draft and is playing this season for the Keystone Ice Miners out of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).
