Lions Take on Argos Friday Night

September 16, 2014 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
B.C. Lions News Release

It's the second of back-to-back home games for the Leos as they play host to their eastern cousins Friday night presented by TELUS.

Fans attending the game can get their football engines started at the popular Nissan Street Party which kicks off at 5:00 pm on the Terry Fox Plaza.

Friday's theme is Countdown to Grey Cup which is slated for BC Place on Sunday, November 30. With that in mind, the club will pay tribute to their 1964 championship club and fans will have a chance to meet numerous Lions legends including Joe Kapp, Willie Fleming, Tom Brown and Norm Fieldgate who will be signing autographs at the Nissan Street Party from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

In keeping with alumni recognition, two other former Grey Cup champions Jamie Taras and Brent Johnson will serve as honorary captains on Friday night. While both are current members of the club's Ring of Honour, their numbers will now be officially retired by the Lions prior to kickoff.

Game Overview

The Lions enter Friday's tilt winners of their past two games and five of their last six including a critical 26-6 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last weekend. The Leos remain in the thick of a West Division race with a 7-4 record on the year, just one win behind both Edmonton (8-3) and Saskatchewan (8-3) who occupy second place with seven regular season games to go on the year. The Argonauts visit Vancouver after a disappointing 40-33 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. The Double Blue led the Stamps by as much as 26 points before Calgary rallied for the win.

Veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn starts his 11th game of the season for the Leos and looks to build on his 261-yard performance on Saturday which included a pair of touchdown tosses. The veteran pivot targeted nine different receivers in the win over Winnipeg with Emmanuel Arceneaux notching a team-high 79 yards and a touchdown on the night. Not to be ignored was the club's163 rushing yards which featured Andrew Harris' 101-yard effort on 13 carries. Look for another balanced offensive attack from coordinator Khari Jones to challenge a Toronto defence currently ranked sixth overall surrendering an average of 328 yards per game.

On defence, the Lions pitched another touchdown shutout last week limiting the high flying Bombers' passing attack to just 121 yards through the air 178 yards overall. Linebacker Solomon Elimimian picked up another six stops to lead his teammates on Saturday and push his league-leading total to 88 tackles on the season.

The Lions will need yet another strong defensive performance on Friday night as future hall of famer Ricky Ray leads a dangerous Toronto offence onto the turf at BC Place. Ray, the league's second-ranked passer threw for 338 yards and four majors against a tough Calgary defence last week.

The Lions defeated the Argos when the two teams met in Toronto in August and the club holds a distinct advantage over the Boatmen over the past nine games with a 7-2 record. Both teams are desperate for a win however and the Leos will face a determined Toronto team Friday night.

Fall is in the air and there's no better way to enjoy BC Lions football than the Global BC Family Zone ($30 including free hotdog and small pop) or the Gemstone Gridiron Deck ($30). Both sections are on sale now - visit Ticketmaster or call 604.589.ROAR for more information.
