Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

MONCTON - Conor Garland and Christophe Lalonde each had a goal and two assists as the Moncton Wildcats defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Sunday at Moncton Coliseum.

The Sea Dogs (0-1-0-1) got goals from Nathan Noel and Drew Gross.

Will Smith, Adam Holwell and Stephen Johnson also scored for Moncton (1-1-0-0).

A game summary can be found HERE.

The match-up started slowly offensively with no shots on goal for either side for the first five minutes.

Moncton scored the opening goal on their first sequence of shots. Cameron Askew took a pass in the left wing circle and fired a shot that Saint John goalie Sebastien Auger kicked out with his left leg. Garland pounded the rebound into an open net.

The Wildcats doubled their advantage while playing shorthanded late in the period. Johnson moved in on the right wing side, got around the Sea Dogs' backchecker and fed a cross-crease pass to Smith for a tap-in and a 2-0 Moncton lead.

Saint John's deficit became three just 1:53 into the second period when Garland took a pass behind the Sea Dogs' goal and sent a short feed in front where Lalonde one-timed a chip shot past Auger.

Garland also set up Moncton's fourth goal with over seven minutes remaining in the period. The Massachusetts native crept toward the goal from the right wing corner and found Holwell streaking into the slot. The defenceman blasted a shot past Auger to make it 4-0.

The Sea Dogs got on the board in the third period with under ten minutes left as the team attempted to kill off a four-minute penalty. Noel pounced on a loose puck at the Saint John blueline and darted ahead on a breakaway, burying a shot through Wildcats' goalie Alex Dubeau's legs with a deke to his forehand side.

Gross scored his first career QMJHL goal 59 seconds later on the same penalty kill. The Millbank, Ontario, native took a pass from Samuel Dove-McFalls below the left circle, waited until Dubeau went down, and fired a backhand shot into the top of the net to make it a 4-2 game.

But the Wildcats got a goal back on the second half of their power play when Johnson found the rebound of a shot from the left point and pushed it across the goal line.

The Sea Dogs pulled Auger late in the game, but could not get any closer on the scoreboard.

Dubeau earned the win in goal for Moncton with 28 saves. Auger made 31 stops for Saint John.

Garland's three points netted him a first star selection while Johnson took second star with a goal and assist. Lalonde, the Wildcats' captain, was named third star with three points in front of 3,316 fans.
