Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - For the second time in a month, the Gwinnett Gladiators picked up an experienced hand from their nearest ECHL rival, with the announced signing of defenseman Bretton Stamler on Tuesday.
Stamler, 27, started and ended the 2013-14 season with the Greenville Road Warriors, competing in 30 regular season games (0g, 3a) and 16 postseason matches (2g, 2a). On Jan. 4th, he signed a Professional Tryout (PTO) agreement with the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, and played for over three months with the New York Rangers affiliate (2g, 6a in 39 games played) before returning to Greenville a week into the ECHL playoffs.
In 146 regular season and postseason professional contests, the native of Edmonton, Alberta has tallied nine goals, 13 assists, and a +13 rating. He joins his former captain, Sean Berkstresser, in coming to Gwinnett from Greenville this summer.
"Gwinnett came recommended to me as an organization by friends and former teammates, both for their winning expectation and to aid me in achieving my career goals," said Stamler. "There is definitely excitement on my end for new surroundings and opportunities."
A seventh-round selection (214th overall) of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Stamler played for Seattle, Edmonton, and Swift Current in the Western Hockey League (21g, 83a in 363 gp) and the University of New Brunswick (18g, 48a over 138 gp) before turning pro in 2012.
He joins a stout Gladiators blue line along with Daniel Spivak (SPEE-vack), Joe Stejskal (STAY-skull), Tony DeHart, and Bo Dolan. On the offensive side of the puck, the team has also signed
Berkstresser, Marshall Everson (EVE-er-son), Randy Cameron, Casey Pierro-Zabotel, Brenden Walker, Nathan Burns, and Anthony Perdicaro this summer. In net, goaltender Mark Guggenberger (GOOG-in-berger) will be returning for the upcoming season.
With the team's 11th season in the books, the Gladiators are set to return for their 2014-15 campaign at the Arena at Gwinnett Center with the team's Home Opener set for October 24th at 7:35 p.m. against the Wheeling Nailers. For tickets and schedule information, visit the official team website at www.gwinnettgladiators.com or call the main office line at 770-497-5100.
