State College Spikes News Release

TROY, NY - The State College Spikes were held to three hits, and the Tri-City ValleyCats scored three times in the third inning to post a 3-0 win over the Spikes on Monday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium and tie the New York-Penn League Championship Series at one game apiece.

The Spikes and ValleyCats will now play a deciding third game in the Championship Series for the second year in a row. Tri-City won the rubber match on the road last year to earn the NYPL title. Game Three is set for Tuesday at Bruno Stadium, with first pitch at 7:00 p.m.

Tri-City starter Joe Musgrove (1-0) tossed seven innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight batters during his time on the mound. Musgrove earned his second win of the year over the Spikes, after pitching six scoreless innings on July 21 at Bruno Stadium.

The ValleyCats broke the game open in the third when Alex Hernandez led off with a single. Kristian Trompiz and Derek Fisher then followed with back-to-back bunts that ended up as hits, and a bases-loaded walk to Jamie Ritchie scored the game's first run.

Spikes starter Austin Gomber (0-1) was then lifted for reliever Joe Scanio. Two more Tri-City runs scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball, respectively, but Scanio notched two strikeouts and a flyout to end the frame.

State College threatened in the ninth inning, with leadoff hitter Danny Diekroeger drawing a walk and Nick Thompson producing a single to left field. However, ValleyCats closer Derick Velazquez (2) elicited a double play and a strikeout to end the game.

Alex De Leon doubled in the second for the Spikes' first hit, while Darren Seferina contributed a single in the sixth.

Gomber took the loss after being charged with all three Tri-City runs, two of them earned, on five hits and two walks over two-plus innings. The left-hander struck out two batters in the effort.

The Spikes have not yet announced a starting pitcher for Tuesday's deciding third game. Tri-City will go with right-hander Austin Chrismon (1-0), who started the second game of the ValleyCats' Semfiinal Series against Connecticut. Chrismon allowed three runs, two of them earned, on eight hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings for the win.

Catch all of the action on Tuesday via the Spikes Radio Network, presented by Penn State Sports Medicine, at 6:45 p.m. with Spikes Live, presented by Mount Nittany Health, on the air from Joseph L.
