Rockets Down Giants 3-1

September 7, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Vancouver Giants News Release

Tyler Benson had the lone Vancouver goal as the Giants lost their first game at the North Delta Pre-Season Invitational, falling 3-1 to the visiting Kelowna Rockets at Sungod Arena on Saturday evening. Cody Porter stopped 26 of 28 shots in his first start of the pre-season in the Vancouver net.

The G-Men took a couple of early penalties in the hockey game, spending four of the first six minutes shorthanded. The Vancouver penalty kill unit did its job, but the Rockets found the opening goal later in the frame when Madison Bowey blew a slap shot past Porter from the right point.

The Kelowna club extended its lead in the early moments of the second period when Colton Heffley knocked home a rebound from the bottom of the right circle to make it 2-0.

The Giants generated some momentum in the third period and nearly got on the board when Dalton Sward fired a hard shot off the post, but the puck stayed out. Porter was forced to come up big a couple of times in the final frame, making a pair of big saves on Kelowna odd-man rushes. The G-Men finally hit the scoreboard when Tyler Benson was hauled down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. The 16-year-old made no mistake, wiring a wrist shot glove side on Kelowna goalie Jake Morrissey. The Rockets would add an empty netter to complete the win as Heffley scored his second of the night.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow at Sungod Arena as the North Delta WHL Pre-Season Invitational continues. Kamloops defeated Victoria 3-2 in overtime in the early game on Saturday.
