Sea Dogs Close Preseason with Win in Charlottetown

CHARLOTTETOWN - Matthew Highmore scored twice and Thomas Chabot added the game-winner as the Saint John Sea Dogs wrapped up the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League preseason with a 7-5 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders Saturday at Eastlink Centre.

Adam Marsh, Luke Green, Nathan Noel and Samuel Dove-McFalls also struck for Saint John (4-1-0-1), which finished the exhibition schedule with two straight wins.

Keith Getson, Daniel Sprong, Mitchell Balmas, Ryan MacKinnon and Alexandre Goulet scored for Charlottetown (2-4-0-0), which lost its last two preseason games.

Highmore opened the scoring under four minutes into the first period, but Getson countered on a shorthanded opportunity just over a minute later.

The Sea Dogs took a two-goal lead with fewer than six minutes remaining in the first period when Marsh and Green scored back-to-back power play goals just 16 seconds apart.

Sprong cut the Islanders' deficit to one with a marker with 65 seconds to go in the frame.

Saint John led 3-2 after twenty minutes and outshot Charlottetown 10-6.

Balmas tied the score four-and-a-half minutes into the second period.

Saint John goalie Blade Mann-Dixon allowed three goals on ten shots before being replaced by Bobby Dugan with just over nine minutes to go in the frame.

Noel and Highmore put the Sea Dogs back in front by two with power play goals in the second half of the period.

Saint John outshot Charlottetown 14-9 in the second period and led 5-3 through forty minutes.

But the Islanders went to work on their own power play opportunities early in the third, with goals from MacKinnon 24 seconds in and Goulet near the six-minute mark.

Chabot's goal with about eleven minutes left turned into the game-winner.

Dove-McFalls added some shorthanded insurance for the Sea Dogs with seven minutes remaining.

Charlottetown outshot Saint John 7-6 in the third period while the Sea Dogs held an overall shot advantage of 30-22.

Dugan picked up the win in goal for Saint John with ten saves in 29 minutes of action. Darryl MacCallum took the loss for the second straight night for the Islanders with 23 stops in front of 663 fans.
