Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A string of three goals by the visiting Dubuque Fighting Saints were the Waterloo Black Hawks' undoing Saturday in a 4-2 exhibition decision at Young Arena.

The lone goal during the opening period went to the Hawks on a long shot 7:07 after the opening faceoff. Tom Novak slipped a puck to Rem Pitlick just inside the blue line, and Pitlick's opportunity eluded goaltender Ben Johansson. At the other end of the rink, Waterloo goalie Hayden Lavigne turned in solid back-to-back saves with four-and-a-half minutes remaining before intermission. Lavigne stopped Ryan Chiasson's initial shot as the veteran forward sped toward the net, then swatted away a rebound look by Jakob Romo.

In the second period, the game swung to the visitors. J.D. Dudek capitalized at 5:08 when the puck came to him with room to shoot at the short side after an initial attempt by Gordie Green was blocked. Dubuque took the lead almost ten minutes later on a goal by Brett Boeing in the shift after a power play had ended.

Midway through the third period, the Saints extended their lead as Romo lifted a shot to the top corner over the shoulder of Kris Carlson, who had taken over in the Waterloo crease midway through the second period. The Hawks drew back within a goal with 4:32 remaining as Brandon Egli slipped a check and tried a low shot from the high slot, which was redirected in by Max Coatta. The comeback bid was snuffed out with 13.9 seconds remaining as Chiasson knocked the puck into Waterloo's empty net.

The Hawks' next three preseason games with be on the road. The exhibition schedule resumes on September 16th with a matchup against the Green Bay Gamblers at the USHL Fall Classic East. The last home game prior to the start of the regular season will be against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, October 20th at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for that final tune-up are on sale now from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
