 Ogden Raptors

Six-Run Second Leads to Game 1 Loss

September 6, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Ogden Raptors News Release

In the second half of the season, the Ogden Raptors had only one inning where their opponent scored more than five runs in an inning against them. In Game 1 of the Pioneer League's South Division Playoff Series, the Orem Owlz scored six runs in the second inning, defeating the Raptors 8-3 Friday night at Lindquist Field.

The loss puts the Raptors in a 1-0 hole in the best-of-three series with the next two games in Orem at Brent Brown Ballpark.

The Owlz sent 10 men to the plate in their six-run second inning to break a scoreless tie. Juan Moreno hit an RBI single to give the Owlz their first run. Tyler Palmer followed with a walk to load the bases. Raul Linares hit an infield single to shortstop, which scored Caleb Adams. With the bases still loaded, Andrew Daniel hit a three-run double to left-center field. Daniel would score two batters later on a Wade Wass double, putting the Owlz ahead, 6-0.

That was all the Owlz pitchers would need. Starter Chris Ellis had his longest outing of the season to earn the win. The third-round pick out of Ole Miss pitched five solid innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Ellis turned the ball over to Keynan Middleton, who was making his first relief appearance in over a year. The Angels' third-round pick from a year ago finished the game by pitching the final four innings. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and matched a season high with seven strikeouts, including five straight at one point.

Raptors first baseman Cody Bellinger had the only two RBI with a two-run single in the third inning after Billy Bereszniewicz and Jimmy Allen drew consecutive walks.

Bellinger and right fielder Theo Alexander were the only Raptors with at least two hits. Bellinger added a triple in the eighth inning, and Alexander hit two singles.

Since 1996, the Raptors have not come back from a game down in a playoff series to win.

The series will shift to Orem for the next two games at Brent Brown Ballpark.

The Raptors will send 2014 first-round pick Grant Holmes (1-1, 4.91 ERA with Ogden) to the mound to face Pioneer League All-Star Michael Bolaski (5-3, 4.52). Game 2 will be broadcast live on 97.5 The Zone, and first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
