Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - Spencer Smallman scored two goals, including the game-winner, in leading the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 4-3 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League preseason action Friday at Harbour Station.

Daniel Del Paggio and Julien Tessier also found the net for Saint John (3-1-0-1), while Nathan Noel added a pair of assists in front of 2,951 fans.

Daniel Sprong, Kameron Kielly and Julien Avon responded for Charlottetown (2-3-0-0), which saw its two-game winning streak snapped.

The Islanders offence struck on back-to-back shifts after the six-minute mark of the opening frame.

Sprong, Charlottetown's leading scorer last season, cut into the slot from the left corner and snapped a wrist shot that beat Sea Dogs' goalie Sebastien Auger low to open the scoring. Former Sea Dog Oliver Cooper earned an assist on the goal.

Just twenty-seven seconds later, Kielly took a drop pass at the top of the left-wing circle and rifled a wrister over Auger's blocker hand and under the crossbar.

Saint John's best chances came late in the period.

Mathieu Joseph created a steal in the Islanders' zone with his club shorthanded, but lost the puck as he attempted a deke to his left on a clear chance.

The Sea Dogs had a long 2-on-1 with about two minutes to go in the period, where rookie winger Adam Marsh opted to keep the puck and shoot from the left wing side. Charlottetown goalie Daryl MacCallum made a pad save and smothered the rebound.

Saint John outshot the Islanders 14-12 in the first period, but trailed 2-0 after twenty minutes.

That changed in the middle frame.

With the Sea Dogs on a power play five minutes into the period, the QMJHL's first overall pick, Luke Green, blasted a slap shot from the top of the right circle that hit MacCallum in the shoulder. The goalie could not control a rebound that bounced in front of the goal and Smallman chipped it home to cut Saint John's deficit in half.

The score remained 2-1 until fewer than five minutes remained in the period when Del Paggio finished off a rebound opportunity into a wide open cage.

Saint John took the lead with 1:10 left, after a lengthy sequence of pressure in the offensive zone.

Samuel Dove-McFalls muscled his way to the left side of the goal and chipped a shot off the far post, creating an open goal for Tessier to deposit a backhand shot.

The Sea Dogs outshot Charlottetown 24-4 in the second period and led 3-2 after forty minutes.

Saint John extended its lead to two goals under two minutes into the third period.

Noel moved from the left corner behind the net, and then sent a short-side pass back to Smallman in the left circle. The Fredericton product made no mistake with a snap shot that beat MacCallum, who was caught looking the wrong way.

Avon got the Islanders back within one goal with five minutes left, scoring a shorthanded goal to complete a long give-and-go that started back at the Charlottetown blueline.

Charlottetown finished the game with a power play, and an empty net, creating a two-man advantage in the final minute, but could not tie the score.

Saint John outshot the Islanders 16-12 in the third period and 54-28 in the game.

Auger earned his second win of the exhibition season with 25 saves. MacCallum made fifty stops in defeat for the Islanders.

Saint John's final preseason game is Saturday, September 6th, at 7 p.m. against Charlottetown at Eastlink Centre.

Season tickets are also on sale now at the Harbour Station Box Office and the Sea Dogs' office on the pedway level of Harbour Station. Season ticket holders can SAVE up to $170 on their seats when compared with single-game box office prices.
