Amarillo Bulls Announce Hiring of Jason Wolfe as Goaltending Coach

Amarillo, TX - Goaltending has been one of the many strengths of the Amarillo Bulls the past four seasons and they hope that will continue this year. The Bulls announced today (Friday) the hiring of Jason Wolfe as their Goaltending Coach.

Wolfe is in Amarillo over the next several days working with the Bulls goaltenders prior to the exhibition game in Odessa tomorrow (Saturday) night. In Thursday's session, Wolfe put the goaltenders through an hour long work out focusing on many of the basics, including lateral movement.

Bulls Head Coach Jon Rogger is thrilled to have Wolfe join the Bulls Staff.

"I'm extremely excited to have Jason on board with us," said Bulls Rogger. "We worked together last year in Des Moines in the USHL. He did a terrific job for us and finding a number one goalie. We hope he can pick apart the guys we have here and find us a number one and number two guy."

Wolfe was the first Maryland born goaltender to play in the professional ranks. After a four year college career at Merrimack College, Wolfe turned professional and signed with the Los Angeles Kings affiliate the Reading Royals of the ECHL. He spent nine years in the professional ranks playing in the ECHL, UHL, IHL, Central Hockey League and in England. Wolfe said he is happy to be working with Coach Rogger again, and helping out a prestigious organization like the Bulls.

"It's great to be with coach Rogger again and coming down to work the goalies here and see where we are at," he said. "I spent some time with Coach (Dennis) Williams during the summer so I know the strong tradition of goaltending here and I want to keep it going."

The strong success of goaltending in the Texas Panhandle has seen seven goaltenders gone on to either play NCAA College hockey or professional.

Wolfe said he is in the process of evaluating all of the goaltenders, and then start to develop an action plan.

"Right now I want to see where everyone is at and then developing a good game plan and some areas that they need to improve on," he said. "I saw a few of the goalies at the various USHL and satellite camps that we had. During the season, I will be watching every game and going back and forth between Maryland and Amarillo. I should be able to see them quite a bit."

The position of goaltending has evolved over the years with many taking on coaching and watching video at a young age. Goaltending has become much more that just stopping the puck but to be that complete package. Wolfe said the position is more fine tuned and even a science aspect.

"There is definitely a lot of interaction between the active player and the coaches now," Wolfe said. "Almost every goalie has a private coach, plus a team coach that works with them very specifically. There is so much skill work in terms of video review, actually technique and strategy. It's pretty in depth at this point."

"We work with kids starting when they are six now developing their skills so they can get that skill set in place."

Wolfe said the perfect goaltender is the Renaissance Man who can do it all.

"They can do a little of everything from being strong mentally, to having good technique and there has to be some athletic ability," he said. "It's all of the pieces put together and I think that is part of the coaches area that they work with specific pieces to bring up the mental game, and work on the physical aspects of it."

The Amarillo Bulls visit the Odessa Jackalopes tomorrow (Saturday) night in an exhibition game at Music City Mall. The face-off is set for 7 pm. There is no radio or fast hockey broadcast for the contest, but the Bulls will be providing updates on their Facebook page.
