Grizzlies Finish Season with Victory in Extra Inning Marathon

JOLIET, IL. - It took fifteen innings and nearly five hours on Thursday night at Silver Cross Field, but the Gateway Grizzlies pulled out a 9-8 win against the Joliet Slammers to finish the 2014 season.
TJ Bennett delivered the go-ahead RBI single to put Gateway on top 9-8 in the top of the fifteenth inning. Bennett ended his season with a four-hit performance and picked up four runs batted in.
The Grizzlies (50-46) led 7-5 heading into the bottom half of the ninth inning, but the Slammers (40-56) scratched across two runs against Gateway closer Richard Barrett to tie the game.
Gateway jumped back in front during the tenth inning when Bennett doubled into the right field corner to drive home Madison Beaird.
Grizzlies' right-hander Dejai Oliver came on for the save opportunity in the bottom of the tenth, but Seth Granger delivered with a run-scoring single to tie the game.
Both teams were held at eight runs a piece until the fifteenth inning.
The Slammers used eight different pitchers in the contest. The longest outing came from Joliet closer David Kubiak (3-1), who went 4.1 innings in relief. Kubiak allowed the go-ahead run in the fifteenth and took the loss.
Gateway turned to five different pitchers in the extra inning affair. Tyler Thompson made the start and allowed two earned runs in five innings. Daniel Cropper pitched a scoreless two frames, while Andrew Aizenstadt finished things off with a scoreless 1.1 innings. Aizenstadt (3-4) picked up the victory.
Every batter in the Grizzlies' starting lineup picked up at least one hit. Kale Kiser and Ben Waldrip finished with three hits, while Madison Beaird picked up four hits and two runs batted in.
With the victory, the Grizzlies have won 50 games in three straight seasons under manager Phil Warren.
