Washington Moves into Second Place with Doubleheader Sweep

September 3, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, jumped into second place in the Frontier League East Division with a doubleheader sweep of the Evansville Otters, winning game one 3-1 and taking game two by a final score of 2-1, Tuesday at CONSOL Energy Park.

In game one, Scott Dunn (8-5) brought his best stuff for the Wild Things, easily pacing his way through five and two thirds innings. The right hander allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four of his 22 faced batters. Even so, Dunn retired eight straight batters before he was lifted for Yevoli. The offense was quick to back up their starter as they found themselves down one score in the top of the third. Frontier League MVP Shayne Houck broke open the scoreless game in the top of the third sending a two-out RBI single scoring centerfielder JR Higley giving Evansville the 1-0 advantage. Scott Kalamar, riding a 16-game-hitting streak before the start of tonight's contest, drove in Ryan Kresky to tie the game at one. The first of two Evansville errors gave Washington their first lead of the night as a dropped pop up by the Otters first baseman allowed second baseman Austin Wobrock to score, 2-1. The following inning, Heck led off with a triple and broke for home as Wobrock put the Wild Things ahead by two, 3-1, with a RBI groundout. Closer Jonathan Kountis was called upon in the top of the seventh and secured the win with his 31st save of the season.

Another dominant pitching performance by a Washington starter in the nightcap carried the Wild Things to their 2-0 victory. Washington starter Troy Marks flirted with a perfect game until the top of the seventh when Evansville's leadoff hitter, centerfielder JR Higley broke up his bid with a single to left. Earlier in the contest, Washington's offense backed up their starter again in the bottom of third plating a pair of runs on RBI singles by Danny Poma and Carter Bell, 2-0. Marks continued to toss a gem into the seventh before being relieved by Kountis, who was making his second appearance of the night. With bases loaded, Kountis struck out two Otters before the baseball scooped under catcher Jim Vahalik's glove to make it a one-run game. However, Kountis regained composure and got a game-ending groundout for his second save of the night.

The Wild Things and Otters battle Wednesday night in game three of the four game series. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, visit www.washingtonwildthings.com, call 724-250-9555 or stop by the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.
