Drive Fall in Season Finale to Legends
September 1, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Mother Nature cooperated with beautiful weather for the season finale at Fluor Field on Monday afternoon. The only thing missing was a Greenville Drive (26-44, 60-79) victory, as the Lexington Legends (28-42, 57-83) used a late comeback to come away with a 6-4 win.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead on Kenny Diekroeger's RBI single in the second, but the Drive looked as if they were headed to a sweep of the four-game series after scoring twice in the fourth and twice more in the fifth.
The fourth was highlighted by a pair of RBI singles, as Danny Bethea's single to center tied things up at one and Tim Roberson's line drive to right gave the Drive the lead.
Danny Mars began the fifth with a single, and Tzu-Wei Lin smacked a double to center to score Mars and chase Lexington starter Niklas Stephenson from the game. Sam Travis rudely greeted reliever Ashton Goudeau with an RBI double of his own to make the score 4-1.
The Legends began their comeback from there, scoring five times over the final four innings. Chad Johnson's RBI single in the sixth against Ty Buttrey scored Mauricio Ramos, who tripled with two outs.
An RBI double by Alexis Rivera against Myles Smith (5-10) cut the Drive lead to one in the seventh inning, and they retook the lead in the eighth on RBI doubles by Johnson and Elier Hernandez.
Alfredo Escalera added an insurance run in the ninth with a solo homer over the Green Monster in left.
The Drive saw all four starters in the weekend series deliver quality starts, and Buttrey was the only one to come away with a no-decision. He allowed seven hits and two runs in six innings while punching out five and not issuing a walk.
Bethea, Mars, Travis and Wendell Rijo all collected two hits for the Drive on Monday afternoon. The Legends offense was led by Ramos, who went 4-5, and Hernandez, Johnson and Rivera joined him with multi-hit games.
The Greenville Drive have now completed the 2014 season, and the ninth season at Fluor Field at the West End was another huge success! The Drive thank all employees, fans, sponsors and media who helped make the 2014 season possible, and we look forward to another great year in 2015 in downtown Greenville!
