Stars Drop Season Finale; Playoffs Next

Huntsville, AL-The Mississippi Braves defeated the Huntsville Stars 2-1 Monday in the final game of the regular season at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Braves, who finished with the best overall record in the Southern League with an 83-56 record did not qualify for the Southern League playoffs.

Entering Monday's game, the Braves trailed Jacksonville by one game in the second half standings. The Braves needed to win, which they did, but also needed Mobile to beat Jacksonville in order to qualify.

Jacksonville defeated Mobile 65 to clinch the second half of the Southern League South.

The Stars meanwhile, ended the regular season with a 77-63 record. Huntsville won the first half of the Southern League North and qualified for the postseason.

Huntsville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hainley Statia drove a solo homerun over the right field wall. It was Statia's fifth homerun of the season.

Mississippi tied the game in the top of the third against Huntsville starter Brent Suter. Kyle Kubutiz singled into center scoring Kyle Wren knotting the game at 1-1.

Suter, who took a no-decision went six innings and allowed six hits on one run. He struck out two and walked one.

The Braves broke the 1-1 tie in the eighth inning against Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford(2-4).

With the bases loaded and one out, Seth Loman hit a grounder to the right side of infield, producing a fielder's choice rbi. Wren scored for the Braves putting them ahead 2-1.

Ryne Harper(9-5) earned the win out of the Mississippi bullpen after pitching two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.

John Cornely recorded his seventh save of the year in the ninth.

Statia led off the ninth with a single, but he would be caught stealing to end the game.

Statia led the Stars by going 2-4 with a homerun.

The Stars will have Tuesday and Wednesday off before they host the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday in the first round of the playoffs. The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:15 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.
