Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (88-54) fell in the regular season finale 3-0 to the Harrisburg Senators (53-89) Monday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The loss sends the season series to 6-1, still in favor of the Sea Dogs.
Harrisburg pulled in front with an unearned run in the second inning against Luis Diaz. Old friend and former Sea Dog Oscar Tejeda began the frame with a walk and moved to second on an error to Sean Coyle, who dropped the ball on a tag with Tejeda stealing. Three batters later, Adrian Sanchez knocked him home with an infield single, giving Harrisburg the 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, the visitors doubled up with another run. Tejeda hit a one-out single and again, Sanchez followed three batters later, plated the third baseman with an RBI fielder's choice and Portland fell behind 2-0.
The Senators sent Paul Demny to the mound, opening up an all-staff day and the righty silenced the Sea Dogs over the first three innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out a pair in his scoreless frames.
James Simmons (3-4) was first out of the 'pen for Harrisburg and duplicated the effort from the starter, tossing three scoreless, allowing just two hits, and striking out one.
Diaz (3-4) pitched the first five innings for Portland and allowed the two runs, one earned, on five hits; he walked three and struck out three. Wilfredo Boscan pitched a scoreless sixth before Aaron Kurcz came on in the 7th.
He was greeted with back-to-back singles by the top of the order. Kurcz induced a fielder's choice, but walked Jason Martinson to load the bases. Drew Vettleson cracked a single up the middle and upped the lead to 3-0.
Portland had no answer all day and went quietly over the final three innings. Colin Bates pitched the ninth in scoreless fashion and picked up his third save of the season.
The Sea Dogs will face the Binghamton Mets in the first round of the playoffs, which get underway on Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:35 from NYSEG Stadium. No pitchers have been announced for either side. Radio coverage begins at 6:15 PM on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network, there is no MiLB.tv coverage in Binghamton.
The first two games will be played in Binghamton, New York. The Sea Dogs will host game three at 6:00 PM on Friday, September 7th and games four and five, if necessary, on Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th. Tickets for all playoff games are currently on sale.
